Governing a Unique Rur-ban School District

Grasslands Shares Unique Rur-ban Governance Story at PSBAA

At the recent Public School Boards' Association of Alberta (PSBAA) Spring General Meeting, Grasslands Public Schools had the opportunity to share what makes our division truly unique.

Our Board of Trustees and senior administration presented on the theme “Governing a Unique Rur-ban School Division,” highlighting how serving both rural and urban communities brings a blend of strengths and challenges that shape every decision we make.

From the Hutterite colonies to the city of Brooks, our board works hard to ensure policies, budgets, and strategic plans reflect the diverse needs of all students and staff. The presentation touched on:

  • The creative approach to balancing rural and urban needs.

  • Building strong partnerships with local councils, the province, and community groups.

  • The importance of equitable resource allocation across 13 schools and 7 colony sites.

  • Unique student supports, such as our EAL programs, small school recruitment strategies, and innovative programming like the Rosemary Farm School and Hockey Skills Academy.

Grasslands was proud to represent our community and share the thoughtful, student-focused governance work happening in our division. It was also a chance to connect with other boards from across Alberta and learn from one another’s experiences.

A big thank you to our trustees and admin team for telling the Grasslands story so well!
