Memo: Serious Concerns Regarding BB Guns and Replica Guns in Schools
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Over the past month Grasslands school administration and the RCMP have had to deal with two separate incidents of students bringing replica guns to school. Earlier in May, a BB gun was brought into a school and last week, another student brought a cap gun into the same school setting. To ensure transparent communication, in both situations, letters were sent to all parents/guardians of students who attend the school.
In both situations, school administration and the RCMP acted swiftly and immediately dealt with the students involved. It is important to understand that these types of situations are taken very seriously by the school authority and law enforcement. It is critical for students and parents to know the repercussions and consequences. Incidents such as these can result in suspension/expulsion from the school and criminal charges being laid.
Our first priority is to ensure the safety of all our students and staff and to nurture a safe and caring learning environment. To support that priority, our schools have a variety of safety protocols in place and activate them, when necessary. We cooperate with local law enforcement authorities when dealing with situations such as these and follow their direction.
Given the recent and tragic events in Uvalde, Texas and the seriousness of these incidents, I must stress that no weapon, even a replica, is to be brought to school. Such actions are seen as serious offenses and will be dealt with as such.
Specific questions or concerns can be directed to your child’s principal. Thank you for working with us to make our schools safe for everyone who learns and works in them.
