I am looking forward to learning about another facet of our educational system by serving as a Grasslands Trustee for Subdivision C. I received my Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Alberta. Throughout my teaching career I have taught at seven different schools both in Strathcona County and in Grasslands Public Schools - Brooks Composite High School, Rolling Hills School, back to B.C.H.S., then at Alcoma School. I have taught every grade from kindergarten to grade 12 - many different subject areas including special education.
Melanie is in her first term with the Grasslands Public Schools and is the representative of Bassano, Rosemary and Gem (Ward A). Melanie was born and raised in the Bassano area, completing K-12 before moving on to post-secondary studies. She is married to Edward Chapman and has three children who attend Bassano School. She has a long history of involvement in local community and surrounding area activities. She is an active volunteer and serves on numerous boards and committees. As a graduate of Environmental Studies, she currently consults to the oil & gas industry. She also studied accounting and manages the financial operations of two businesses in addition to a number of book keeping contracts. In her spare time she is a hobby beekeeper, an avid reader and enjoys spending time with her family skiing and camping.
I started my career in education in 1975. After graduating from the University of Calgary, my wife, Terry , and I moved to Drumheller to begin my teaching career as a high school Social Studies teacher. In 1980, our family moved to Brooks, where I spent 32 years at Brooks Composite High School. While there I was a Teacher, Guidance Counsellor and even a short time as a Vice-Principal. Also, while in Brooks, my youngest child, Stefanie, was born, completing our family. The two older children, Janessa and Nathan were born in Drumheller. All three children were raised and educated in Brooks. Over my career, I served in many capacities with the ATA Local. In 2012 I retired from Grasslands School Division. Subsequently, I took employment at Brooks Campus of Medicine Hat College, working as an Advisor, Tutor and Exam Proctor. I am now honoured to be serving as a Trustee of Grasslands School Division. I hope to serve the community well.
